Comb-bound documents convey professionalism without requiring an outsourced print run or a large investment. A binding machine and a box of plastic combs are all you need to produce polished reports, training manuals, catalogues, and booklets in-house — on demand and at a fraction of the cost of a commercial bindery.

Why Comb Binding Remains Popular in Thai Offices

Unlike perfect binding (glued spines), comb-bound documents can be opened completely flat — making them far easier to read, annotate, and photocopy from. Unlike wire-o binding, combs are easy to open and re-close, allowing pages to be added or removed after binding. This makes comb binding the preferred format for documents that are regularly updated, such as employee handbooks, SOPs, price lists, and training materials.

Manual vs. Electric: The HIC HPB-240 and EPB-21

The HIC HPB-240 is a fully manual all-metal machine that punches and binds documents up to F4 size (330 mm) with a 24-hole pattern. Its all-metal frame (9.4 kg) provides the stability needed for clean, consistent punching on every sheet. The margin control and individual punch functionality allow you to punch even the thickest covers cleanly. It accepts combs up to 2 inches (approximately 450 sheets) and requires no power supply, making it reliable regardless of the office infrastructure.

The HIC EPB-21 is the electric alternative for A4-size documents (21-hole pattern). An electric punching mechanism eliminates the hand fatigue that comes with manual punching when binding large batches. If your team produces more than 20–30 bound documents per week, the EPB-21 will recover its higher cost through time savings within months.

Step-by-Step: How to Bind a Document

  1. Collate all pages in order, including covers. Ensure all pages are the same size.
  2. Set the margin stop on the puncher to match your paper size (A4 or F4).
  3. Punch the pages in batches — do not exceed the machine’s rated punching capacity per pass.
  4. Select the correct comb diameter based on the total stack thickness.
  5. Open the comb teeth using the binding bar, slide all punched pages onto the open teeth, then release the bar to close the comb.
  6. Check that all pages are seated correctly on the comb before releasing fully.
